With the newly prioritized focus on competency-based education and assessments in nursing programs, nurse educators are looking to adopt strategies to develop and measure competence. Educators are challenged with finding teaching methods that support the development of learner competence along with assessment data. This study investigated a screen-based virtual patient simulation scenario as an exemplar to understand how this learning mode influences nursing students' competence related to decision making and patient care.
