Dr. Christine 'Christy' Heid, PhD, MSN/Ed, RN, CNE, CHSE is a dedicated nursing educator, simulationist, innovator, and healthcare advocate with over two decades of experience in the field. Currently pursuing a post-masters Nurse Practitioner certificate in Psychiatric-Mental Health Nursing at Maryville University and advocating for Ovarian Cancer awareness and research locally and globally, Christy brings a wealth of knowledge in nursing education, simulation, consulting, medical-surgical nursing, and oncology care and survivorship to any role in which she is privileged to serve.
With a Doctor of Philosophy in Nursing and Master of Science in Nursing with an emphasis on Healthcare Education from the University of Phoenix School of Graduate Studies and a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Mount Carmel College of Nursing, Christy's academic background complements her extensive clinical experience. Her professional journey includes roles as a Nursing Education Consultant at ATI Nursing Education, where she achieved significant contributions to nursing and simulation-based education, as an independent Principal Investigator of a multi-site research study, where she investigated an innovative clinical teaching and learning tool to develop clinical judgment, as Assistant Professor at Ashland University College of Nursing & Health Sciences, Course Coordinator at Marion Technical College, Preceptor and Clinical Faculty at Ohio Health Marion General Hospital, and Course Developer at Tri-Rivers Career Center, where she reduced barriers to education and simulation-based learning, and as a Vascular Nurse at Avita Health System, Staff Nurse at The Ohio State University James Cancer Hospital, and Charge Nurse at Mount Carmel Medical Center, where she made a notable impact on team outcomes and patient care.
Dr. Heid’s commitment to nursing education is evident in her ongoing professional development and innovative research interests. She has participated in numerous conferences and workshops, including the current chair of the International Nursing Association for Clinical Simulation Learning Education Committee and an Organization for Associate Degree Nursing Simulation Committee Member. Her expertise extends to curriculum development, having contributed to the creation of course materials for various nursing programs and professional organizations, including the Healthcare Simulation Best Practices Workshop with member representatives from INACSL, SSH, and ASPE. As a highly rated nursing education consultant, Dr. Heid has worked with nursing programs across the country to support faculty as they develop nursing program policies and curricula, apply best practices to student assessment and program evaluation, and engage students in active learning strategies in classroom, laboratory, simulation, and online environments for both traditional and concept-based curricula. She is passionate about nursing education and welcomes the opportunity to share ideas, promote innovative teaching and learning strategies, and nurture ‘out of the box’ thinking to enhance student and faculty success to improve the health of all.
Dr. Heid has investigated online and technology-mediated teaching/learning across the curriculum, developed strategies to enhance theory-practice integration, created clinical tools for teaching and acquiring clinical judgment, and identified motivational predictors of persistence behaviors. Her work on fostering deep learning through online post-conference learning has been published in the peer-reviewed journal *Teaching and Learning in Nursing* and is a contributing author for the *SSH Certification Blueprint Review Reference Manual*. She is the creator and principal investigator of the *Heid ATE Guide for Clinical Teaching and Learning©*, an innovative clinical tool to facilitate student learning and faculty teaching of clinical judgment. Dr. Heid was honored with the 2020 Organization for Associate Degree Nursing (OADN) Foundation Grant which supported a multi-site research project evaluating this tool. Beyond her academic and professional roles, Christy is passionate about community health and advocacy. As a survivor of ovarian cancer, she has channeled her personal experience into meaningful community engagement, organizing fundraisers and awareness campaigns for the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition. Her innovative approaches to community health education demonstrate the vital link between nursing education and public health awareness.
