We conducted a prospective observational study at Tulsa Community College (TCC) to assess the impact of TeamBirth Education Curriculum on student nurses' knowledge and perceptions of shared decision-making, patient-centered communication, and birth equity. TeamBirth, a quality improvement solution, aims to enhance communication, teamwork and shared decision-making during childbirth. TCC is the first academic institution to integrate the TeamBirth principles into its nursing program. In collaboration with Ariadne Labs and Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, the curriculum incorporates teaching on shared decision-making and patient autonomy. Pre-post surveys (N=422) and focus group discussions (N=24) revealed significant improvements in students' perceptions of birth equity knowledge (χ²=72; p<.001) and confidence in shared decision-making (χ²=4.19; p=0.04) after exposure to the curriculum, indicating its effectiveness in fostering patient-centered care. This study emphasizes the importance of innovative educational interventions in nursing programs, particularly focusing on shared decision-making, patient-centered care, and equity.
Learning Objectives:
Explaining TeamBirth - what it is, why it was developed, and how it impacts birth equity, shared decision-making, and centering patients in their birth journey.
To demonstrate how TeamBirth was added to the maternal/child nursing school curriculum via lectures and simulations.
Sharing pre/post-student survey quantitative data and focus group discussion qualitative data for a mixed method analysis.
